I have a 16 inch M1 MBP, which is 3456 x 2234, one of the sharpest laptop displays out there. I recently got a Dell G3223Q which is 32 inches & 4K, and for some reason text looks much sharper than my mac. Maybe its due to near-sightness and or viewing distance, but even close-up the dell one looks better.

Turn off font smoothing: defaults -currentHost write -g AppleFontSmoothing -int 0 (restart after running this)

MacOS Settings - Display - set text size at 14pt; menu bar size: large.

Safari settings: Advanced - "never use font sizes smaller than..." at 12pt.

I find that this makes the text look much better on retina displays. Give you that feel of their old default "larger text" scaling implementation without sacrificing screen estate.
