I love doing a fresh install of iOS! lol. I know it is crazy.

I only do it once a year on my iPhone and iPad, when the new iOS is released (plus when I’m troubleshooting devices from friends and family). I secretly love it - feels fast and fresh and new. I usually DFU it. I’m sure most of that feeling is just in my head 😂😂😂 I do the same with my MacBook Pro. Kind of annoyed I can’t DFU my AppleTV 4K!

It change absolutely nothing to do a fresh install or just update OTA as the updates comes. I only do this if I have an issue that I need to restore my phone. Otherwise I’ll just update even for major ones and never had problems.
Just for info I can’t remember the last time I restore my phone. For what I remember it was when I jailbreak my old iPhones or just wanted to leave a beta.

I like doing a fresh install (Restore) after running a bunch of betas of the forthcoming iOS release every year. As soon as the new iOS goes public, it’s “off with the old” time! 😉

I've been running off backups since pre-lightning cable days. My phones always run great and even though it's much less work than it used to be with everything being cloud based these days I still see no reason to start over.

Uhh, I do a complete restore both on my iPhone and Mac for every major OS release.

I have tried to do straight upgrades on the Mac only to end up with it installing the OS installer it shipped with (so I'd always end up with Lion on the 2011). When I mentioned this a few years back now, someone said it had to do with me adding stuff to the command line. Don't know if that's an issue now since they started separating user data in the last few versions of macOS, but it really doesn't bother me anyway. I just throw all my documents into my external drive and then put them back in as needed.

I would hate doing a fresh install. The number of accounts I'd have to reconfigure, the number of apps I'd need to pull back down, the number of those apps that I need to reset the credentials on (eg. banking apps, stock portfolio stuff, etc) not to mention the PITA involved in making sure all my authenticators are either backed up, or turned off via the services in question and then turned back on again after the fresh install, etc.

Oh, and there's also the fact that I hold a LOT of data on my phone and copying all that over again, ugh.

That to me is a nightmare. I had to update my iPad due to it needing to be on iOS 13 for me to download Disney+. It soft bricked. I had to DFU. I did a fresh install of all apps (Thankfully I don't have many in my iPad). I don't want to imagine doing a fresh install on my iPhone.

I did when the upgrade is jump, I.e from iOS 10 to iOS 12. Or in early version 13.1.x until 13.2 (due to has lot of defect). Other cases, I usually reset all settings only.

I guess different people like and prefer some things over others.

Fair enough.

Yes I have and it is a real problem in my head. I waste enormous amount of times doing this.
It is a very good experience to setup a fresh OS without backup.

It got even to a point where I make resolutions to not do it anymore unless I have a problem that I cannot resolve (which never happens). Ultimately I always end up validating a restore for myself with made up reasons…

The fresh OS is indeed faster but i find it eventually goes back to "regular" speed once the crap starts piling up. On my computers, i stopped doing that after el capitan. I will only consider a clean install if something is obviously buggy

For me, if i need a fresh install ,"Restore all content & settings" just isn't good enough got me... I re-downlaod, and re-apply firmware too from iTunes connected via USB. even if it's already the latest..

that's pretty crazy. I do that re-applying usually 2 to 3 times in one hit. Just to be on the extra safe side.

Not so much a fresh install, but I update over iTunes for every single update.

That means downloading the entire firmware and waiting for iTunes to install it on the phone through the cable. For some reason, I prefer doing this as compared to the more convenient OTA update method.

I never do OTA updates... For some reason, "Data recovery" is to me is kind of fake white screen.. I guess a scare tatic, because there is no way an update (most convenient, and what Apple likes users to do more) would tend to fail that often if Apple were true to their word.

It may take longer but i have the bandwidth to download large/full updates.

I started with iPhones in 2008. Since then, I bought one every year and always went with the restore from backup option.

Have you ever encountered any system glitches because of this? What is your Other System Data under iPhone storage? I’m curious.

problem being im a hoarder and have about a decade worth of message history.
i used to go deep down the rabbit hole and use iBackupbot to facilitate, but ive since gotten lazy.
any workarounds?
