to 4G LTE speed via software update (in the future) or will that require us to wait for an iPhone 5 (or later) to get that capability?

AT&T now has 4G service in OKC and I would like to get that capability. I have an iPhone 4 and iPad 2, both with unlimited 3G data plans. I am considering dropping the iPad plan completely and taking my iPhone to the minimum data plan and using the AT&T mobile hotspot unit but it has a 2 year contract for the good deal $69 unit price. It would be a break even on the 4G LTE data plan on it with the $15 iPhone minimum data plan (compared to two $30 unlimited plans), but also mean another piece of equipment to carry.

Anyone have a better way to skin this cat?

It's a hardware thing, so no, your current devices will never get LTE.

Precisely. It's like how the original iPhone got iOS 2.0, but that didn't magically give it 3G capability like the iPhone 3G had (because it lacked internal 3G radios).
