Does anyone use an SD card as expanded storage for documents or photos?

Sounds to me like it would be a cheaper way of having more expandable storage.

Thoughts?

I do. If it is sufficiently speedy, it works well. Not great, but good. I store VMs on mine.

Do you use the VM's from the SD card? that's the last thing I would use it for.

I have used them for music and it works great.

I don't really use it, mainly because I don't like how it sticks out of the port. It just bugs me.

I have the Nifty Mini drive with a 64GB Micro SD card so it does not stick out. I just store media files on it.. music and photos. It works quite well.

Something like NiftyDrive is a nice way to extend the storage without having the SD card stick out.

I don't use mine often, I just pop in the SD card from my Nikon D3100 to move the files.

I do. I use a 64GB micro SD card inside an Apotop adapter (bought on newegg.com) which I fill with various videos. Excellent use of extra space on my 256GB MBA.

Nifty Drive with 32GB card ... I use this just for quick backup of current work and my most important files. Works well.

Silver Nifty MiniDrive in a 13" Air

... with a 64Gb micro SD card configured as a time machine.

I have the same setup on the iMac but on the Air the silver drive is fully home in the SD slot and not obvious unless you are looking for it.

Thanks for all the responses. Seems like the SD card is a useful addition for limited space.

I've got about as fast of an SD card as you can get, and I do use the VMs from it, but only rarely. I generally use it to store them, and move them to the SSD when needed. That said, for most uses, the SD is a reasonable extension of storage (but not an exciting one.)
