Does anyone use cases with a metal bumper?

Yes. It was the Spigen neo metal hybrid.

I don't get it...aren't these iPhones made of aluminum/metal?

They are.. But that's why they have the antenna bands. I can't speak for all metal cases, just my experience with that one.
