I have only used Sherlock a handful of times just to see what it was about. I believe Sherlock is a little bit older program from older versions of OSX. My question is whether this program has any usefulness when the internet search engines are so developed. Maybe there is something I'm missing with it?

Sherlock can do lots of things as evidenced by the diversity of the bundled channels. What do you want to do?

I guess what I'm saying is that I can't see any obvious benefit from using Sherlock from a quick glance. When I typed in a few searches in the internet tab it seemed only to give me shopping sites and old dated hits. I guess what I'm asking is if there are any advantages to using this program or is it just one of those things apple kept in the operating system.

I'm pretty sure Sherlock was introduced in OS 8.

In the context of Spotlight and widgets, Sherlock does seem a bit dated.

I think that you need to figure out what it is that you want. Until you do that, Sherlock and nothing else will be of any benefit to you.
