Thinking about pulling the trigger and getting the apple watch using best buys black Friday deal ($50 off the 42mm GPS version). Still kinda concerned about buying it with series 4 coming out so soon however if for some reason I decide that series 4 is so much better for some reason I might decide to sell it on swappa or ebay. So my question is should I buy it with apple care plus (is it worth the $50?) Will it increase the resell value if I do? Or should suck it up and wait till the end of September...

Recent sales on eBay for a used Series 3 42mm GPS+Cellular are $230-290 (top three recently completed). Usually AppleCare will increase the sales price a little, but not sure how much. That price will usually drop some on release of the next watch as well.

Yes, my experience is that Apple Watches have terrible resale values. Especially if something better comes out. Expect to take a big hit.

When I bought my first-generation Watch in October 2016, I paid about 2.6x more than what I was able to sell it for 14 months later. In that case, it included AppleCare. Now I'm preparing to sell my Series 2, and that one does not have AppleCare, so I'm expecting to have a ROI of even less. I'll report back once I sell the S2.

It doesn’t really make a difference what services you’re adding to the Apple Watch to increase the value, because right before the launch of the Series 4 around that time frame Assumingly, the market will be flooded with eBay and Swappa for those selling their *used* Series 3 who want to upgrade to the Series 4. So your ‘value ‘ of the the watch would drop anyways regardless if it includes AppleCare or not. Tech in general deappreciates.

You'll get a better price for your used Apple Watch compared to one without AppleCare+. From my experience over here, people like the fact that they can get a "new" (refurb) if anything goes wrong with it.

Electronic watches including the Apple Watch have VERY little resale value.
This is true. Doesn't matter if it has Apple Care or not.

I tried selling my ceramic edition series 2 for 4-5 months during the winter and all I got were offers below $400 for a watch that was 6 months old with 3 years Apple Care. I ended up keeping the watch rather then take that much of a loss.

I suggest the OP goes to Craig’s List and see the prices people are getting for Use Aplle watches.

These are not investments.

At this point I wouldn't worry about the resale price. You're losing 20% at least in the first year. AC+ would increase the value a bit (you can also cancel the remaining balance of AC+ and get money back..).

I personally would wait. Once the series 4 comes out, older gens will depreciate further. You could buy a used series 3 for a good price

Alright so I just sold the Series 2, and I'm looking at a 35% decrease in value. This means that I originally paid 1.6x what I am getting back at resale.

Are you planning to upgrade to the Series 3 or Series 4?

Not an Apple Watch but, last November I sold an almost new iphone8 plus on eBay with almost two years AppleCare +
( the 8 only came out two months before). It may have put a few pounds on the price, but not a lot. My advice, get a refund on the AppleCare and sell the watch without it.

I actually bought a Series 3 (in my signature) last Thursday when Best Buy had its Black Friday in July sale. By selling my Series 2, I'm getting a return-on-investment (based on what I paid for Series 3) of 20%. (Am I doing this right?)

Hmm, I don't think you can have a return of investment since the apple watch you sold didn't increase in value. But I ended up buying one too (first apple watch) 42mm Nike sport (GPS) I got impatient and I had just got money for my birthday hehe. I ended up not getting apple care because my credit card extends the warranty by a year (amex). Anyway, I think we would need to know how much you sold your Apple watch for and how much you paid for the new one to calculate if you really got a return on investment (which I doubt).

.

I sold my series 2 for $210, and I bought the series 3 for $354

I sold both my Series 0 and Series 1 at a HUGE loss. Apple Care did not improve the selling price at all.

On my Series 1, the seller never even asked about Apple Care, so I just cancelled it and took the pro-rated refund.

That seems both smart and selfish. I like it.

No, it doesn't. I lost the price of AC when selling items so lately I just remove AC from it get refunded and just sell it. Everyone who buys second hand doesn't want to pay for the AC it seems.

Thats Because they want the Apple Watch as cheap as possible and they usually don’t care about a warranty or not. They’re just looking for something that ‘works’ in most cases.

Really depends on which model you're talking about... If it's a sports models people just want it as cheap as possible. However, if you're selling a ceramic with massive repair costs, then people appreciate the AC+

How do you factor massive repair cost? Aside from the Sapphire display which the stainless incorporates, usually Apple doesnt have to replace the casing (In which they can’t because of soldered components), as its just the battery. I’m not sure what else Apple Would repair with the watch besides the battery or haptic engine, anything beyond that and they just issue a replacement watch.

Out of warranty repairs on the ceramic are around $800, so AC+ would be a godsend if you dropped the thing and cracked it. I meant a replacement for the watch body itself, not repair, sorry.
