I feel like id rather have 16gb and 512gb and microLED on some sale price if you get up into a mid tier M2 AIr. for that money.

am weighing things out. anything i get is a massive upgrade from my (entry-level) 2016 macbook. i wanted a simple M2, but that 256gb drive issue is disappointing. so, once you bump that up, add applecare... hmm.

i never considered it before, but i might just grab a refurb 8/256 M1 air. for me, it's all a holding pattern, in the (possibly unlikely) event that we get a 12" macbook again (the one i have is my fave mac ever, and i've owned a lot of macs). still, i would like to join the silicon era (& 2016 was a long time ago...)

*shakes fist in the direction of cupertino*

not gonna lie a smaller or larger Air will suck me in, but as is I'm in a holding pattern with my base M1 Air. its great

cool to the touch using it with my monitor too. tasks have never been smoother on an external from any previous Mac laptop ive used to power it

I was gonna buy the M2 Air, but now I think I won't. And I already have the M1 Air. So now I don't really know what to get.. But I went to the Apple Store, and I might buy the M1 iMac lol. It looks great and I think it will help with my posture as well.

I said I wasn't going to get the M2 but, I decided I was tired of offloading data all the time on my M1 MBA (256) so, I splurged and ordered a 16 / 2TB M2 Air. If my situation with data was normal and I was fine with 256 now, I wouldn't have had a problem ordering the same M2, if fancy struck. Too many here are blowing this SSD issue way out of proper context and focus. At best, it is a non-issue for the target audience for the M2 Air.

agreed. anyone updating from, say, an intel air will only see benefits; and i doubt most consumers will 'feel' a difference between the 256 ssd and a larger one. but for the geeks and the lunatics (am including all macrumors forum peeps in that reference), the issue is, in fact, probably an issue...

AS relies more heavily on SSD so I could see r/w speeds being affected bringing down the overall impact of M2 increases, which probably aren't that huge even with unhindered SSD's, over M1.

subjective, of course but I wish they hadn't done that all other things being equal. Still a nice machine but. An obvious Achilles heel of the base model.

You are right. It has become an issue for many here when it shouldn't be an issue. The beehive mentality has sucked a lot of people in and many are stressing, mad, depressed, and who knows what else, all because a YouTube clickbait artist made a big stink with his clickbait video and several other YouTube clickbait video revenue whores followed suit.

youtube videos still to come:

"i was banned from starbucks when people saw my fingerprint-covered midnight M2!!!"

"my girfriend left me when i gifted her an M2 air... with the 256gb SSD!!!"

"my place in line for the new avatar movie was revoked when others noticed the lack of a wedge on my new air!!"

I'm sorry, but if you're intending to buy a Mac with 256 GB of storage, you wouldn't be looking at the higher end Macs in the first place.
M2 would be replacing my 2021 12" IPP as a supplemental device to my desktop. Don’t need more than 256GB, but do need the RAM. So instead I’m consolidating to a 16" MBP to replace IPP and most desktop tasks.

DUMB question i know... so for the M2 Air if I choose 256 but 16gb, are there any big issues that will cause slow down compared to MBP 16gb, 512gb?

My base air 2 coming today is replacing a M1 12.9" iPad I sold a few months ago, I have a 24" iMac too. I tried a 14" but made my iMac feel old lol, and was a bit thick/heavy, wouldn't stop me getting one again but as the air is going to be moved around a lot, and in my work bag in the back of my truck may as well try out the lightest there is.

If you intend to use the M2 Air for what it is and not try and treat it as a MBP, you should be fine, unless you need to render large raw files and other intense usage for long and sustained periods.

It's a bummer, but it means 2 things for me - wait for 512 refurbished, or wait for 12" or 15" MacBooks. The bummer part is really - the Air is always great for its value for money - and 256 gives you that low price point - but since Apple cheapened out on the drive, it forces peeps to the 512, no longer making the device such a nicely priced product. I don't want the heft of the MBP, at least not for my intended purpose, which is as a secondary lightweight go everywhere laptop. But I don't want to have to sacrifice performance just because I prefer a 256, or because I want the base model. It's a shame really, the base is dead to me tbh.

only one worth buying imo, if speck up the 14" is your friend and 10 times better for similar price
Do me a fav and let me know how much the cheapest 14" is with at _least_ 24 gigs of ram and 1 tb storage... then, tell me how much the m2 air is with 24 gigs of ram and 1 tb storage. Then subtract the smaller from the larger. Then add the difference in AppleCare price...

I think you'll find a _very_ non-similar price

I wonder if Apple will start manufacturing M1 Air's with 1x256 instead of 2x128 to cheapen out there too and give them parity with M2 Air base moving forward :/

I need minimum 512GB in any computer... I work with too many video assets. So that solves the issue. Plus I enjoy the SD card slot a lot.

The speed of the 256gb SSD config was always going to be irrelevant to me, as I’m running my current machine at around 230 gb, so I was always going to order a 512 or higher config.
