Rumor has it that Apple will be announcing an iPad 3 soon, possibly a new MBP next quarter, and an iPhone 5. I haven't heard anything about the MBA. I'm thinking about buying one as I'm entering college. What have you heard? What are your opinions?

It will happen in Q2 2012, or maybe in Q3 2012.
New chips from Intel will not arrive before March, thus Apple needs to buy them, build them into their machines and so on.

I also agree that they are about as fast as they ever will be. I just purchased a MacBook Air yesterday to complement my MacBook Pro I purchased 2 weeks ago lol. If you need a computer for college then buy one now if you need it. In the computer world there will always be something better faster smaller on the horizon, so it comes down to when YOU need it.
Sure Apple has a plan; I think we can expect Ivy chips, bigger flash and next year maybe HighRes screen ?
The last refresh was in June! Why are you acting like its been years? At least let the current gen go out of warranty before you start crying for upgrades!
End of July, there is still a good time to wait for the next upgrade IMO, and I think it will resemble small bumps until a large upgrade sometime in 2013, probably middle to end of 2013.
Looking at the Buyer's Guide can give some possible insight:
It has been 205 days since the last update in July 2011.
Before 07/2011 it was 273 days in October 2010.
Before 10/2010 499 days in June of 2009.
Before 06/2009 237 days in October of 2008.
before 10/2008 273 days from the original release in January 2008.
So, it could be in 30 days or so, or a couple of months or another 9 months...

the main thing that the air's really need i think is more ram because flash eats up a lot of that in safari.
I think the MBA should have a minimum of 4GB and some way to upgrade the RAM and SDD as well.
Based on previous updates, I would assume that MBPs will be refreshed in Q2 (as soon as Ivy Bridge is available, rumors say April/May) and MBAs briefly later (late Q2 / early Q3).
I will compare the new MBA 13" and MBP 13" to confirm how beefier the MBP gets over the MBA: if they're both more less in line (such as it's the case right now), I will go for the MBA due to its lighter weight. Otherwise, if they've managed to pack enough extra muscle into the MBP, then I'll be happy to sacrifice a little bit of portability and go for the MBP.
Again, it will all depend on how wide the performance gap will be between the two 13"ers.

I'm guessing they will discontinue the 13" MBP and start at 15". Since the MBA is technically better anyway. Higher res, just as fast, same graphics....just a little shorter battery life.
