New to here. I read some people's story of receiving error message during 2.02 updating process and bricked their iphones. So I'm wondering if Apple already ship iphones with 2.02 already installed. So I can avoid the risk of breaking my iphone during updating process. Thanks

If you just purchased iphone 3G with 2.02 installed, please write here.

You will be fine. You cannot "brick" your iPhone while updating. If you cannot restore, put into DFU mode by following these directions (they work for windows and mac) DFU mode instructions. Go ahead and get it. If it really does get stuck, you can take it to the Apple store as long as you do not jailbreak it.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5C1 Safari/525.20)

careful tho, you might get hit by a meteor on the way to the apple store.

Lightning strikes are increasing amongst Apple users.

Thanks txhockey9404, for your info. Basically I'm thinking 2.02 came out for more than 1 week, Apple should start to ship those iphones with new software installed. I don't quite get the meaning of "bricking" the iphones. It seems that some users get battery or reception issues after updating to 2.02. If iphones come with new software, maybe these issues would not be present.

I bought my iphone 3G last tuesday and it had 2.0.1 installed. i upgraded to 2.0.2 with no problems at all.

Relax people!

"Bricking" means the phone has been rendered useless, like a brick.

unless it's typed in all caps, followed by 39 exclamation points...

e.g. "U2 SONG BRICKED MY 3G IFONE!!!!???!!!! WTF???!!!!! HAAAALLLLP??!!!!"

...then it just means it needs to be rebooted or restored. :D

Bricks are useful too. I know - my house is made of several thousands of them and it does a good job of keeping me warm and dry.

It's not made of duff iPhones though. That would be useless. :D

Picked up 2 week 31 iPhones (white and black) on Saturday in Ann Arbor both with 2.0 on them. Still haven't upgraded them to 2.02 although I probably should.

I just read the latest report that Iphone 3G 2.0 and 2.0.1 demands more power than it needs to and over-loaded AT&T signal towers, and 2.02 is released to decrease the power needed for 3G. So more iphone users update to 2.02, the better the reception will be.

Apple should ship out Iphones loaded with 2.0.2 software, ideally 2.1. as soon as possible. Who knows how many people still stay with 2.0 or 2.0.1 and not even bother to update, or worry of brick/worsening their iphones by updating.

Got a black 16GB at Apple Store (Regent Street, London) yesterday as a swap-out after asking whether my 5 hour battery life was normal. It was a week 32, and it came with 2.0.1 installed.
