yes, some sort of student ID.

when i got mine i was only at college (FE) so didn't get as good a discount as university (HE). but, i went with my girlfriends brother who although dropped out of university still had a valid student ID. so i got full HE discount, which means they don't actually verify they are actually students.

I ordered my first MBP online and they didn't check or ask for it. I just bought 2 MBPs at the Apple Store and I was never required to show Student ID.

Acceptance letter will work along with government ID. I tried it like that too, they asked for my license

Yep. Apple has me log into my school's individual Educational Store site using my Student ID.

Can I also get it tax free (as long as i order online SC's tax-free holiday Aug. 7) and with a free iPod on the same invoice?

I showed the store employee an acceptance email, that worked (he may have asked for my ID).

However when I returned the AluMB I got credit on an Apple card, and spent it online. I didn't need a student ID or anything to get into my school's Apple store. . .

I'm 31 years old and long out of school.....I walked in asking if they would match the 'online' student offer as I was hoping to avoid shipping and of course they said "yes" - i just played dumb and I was asked for my student ID and or something else when I went to check out. I simply said I won't have it until August - I was simply asked if I "promise" I was going to school....Um, of course! :D Needless to say I walked out with a new MBP and 8 gig iTouch.

However, online i was just asked to select my "school" and it never had me verify anything....

Nice bro.

In order to get the free iTouch do u need to purchase the Mac and the the Itouch at the same time or can you get a Mac and then ipod like a week later?

same time

Apple Computers and qualifying iPod models must be purchased at the same time and on the same receipt

and I didn't mail anything in, just submitted the rebate online (I purchased the items in person at the Apple store)

You only need the mail the UPC code if the purchase is made at an apple retail campus store. If you bought it online or at a regular apple store, then the proof of purchase is the receipt as stated in the ToC.
