Just tried to install because I was curious about its ececution/performances on my Mac Mini 2018: in settings only the keyboard seems available/proposed.
Yes, it does. Only the newer Playstation 4 DualShock will work natively as well as an Xbox controller. I run a Mac Mini 2018 with Catalina. I play A9 on the Mini and had to purchase a PS4 controller...which right now they are hard to find in old-school stores! If you search online you will see that PS4 is the recognized controller for the latest Mac OS. I can use it when plugged in via USB or wirelessly via Bluetooth. Apple page below describes controllers.
Connect a wireless Xbox, PlayStation, or other Bluetooth game controller to your iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro.

The PS3 controller will not natively work. I did have limited success with downloading an app named Enjoy2 which is a controller mapper. Worked once then did not. And it was flakey when it did. I have a few PS3 controllers around so I thought I would be able to not spend money for a PS4 controller! Wasn't my lucky day for that.
However, the image of the controller is off. See image. It does not show the PS4 controller's "options" or "share" buttons. It also does not show the touchpad in the middle. There is no middle button like shown and the controller's "options" button is the IGM (in game menu). Finally, only the analog stick on the left works to control left/right. Not the d-pad left/right buttons. On a keyboard you can use the tab key to switch on/off touchdrive during play which comes in handy sometimes. But there is no way to do this from the game controller unless you pause, switch, unpause. Not good.
I have a support ticket in to Gameloft...but based upon past experiences, I doubt they will do anything. I have to bug support to pay attention to support tickets.
