Hi all,

Are the IR lasers used for Attention Awareness with the iPhone X, or does it only involve the front camera?

Well for notifications it would use the entire camera/IR system, because it is actually unlocking the phone.
As far as making the sound lower when you pick up the phone, I would think that is just gyro stuff.

What other attention aware features are there?

My daughter used to be afraid of our cats at night because they had "wayzer eyes!"

No, because it doesn't use lasers, just a bunch of dots via IR projection.

The IR projector is a laser.

Not dimming the screen when you’re looking at it.

This is from Apples Face ID white paper. They don't say lasers anywhere. A laser is an amplified focused beam, the dot projector is spreading out a light source.

"Once it confirms the presence of an attentive face, the TrueDepth camera projects and reads over 30,000 infrared dots to form a depth map of the face, along with a 2D infrared image."

Also under iPhone X support doc, under the safety heading it says this.

"The TrueDepth camera system is safe to use under normal usage conditions. The system will not cause any harm to eyes or skin, due to its low output. It's important to know that the infrared emitters could be damaged during repair or disassembly, so your iPhone should always be serviced by Apple or an authorized service provider. "
