Hello

I am considering to buy an ATV4K and I have a question about format settings.
I have a 4K HDR TV set and also an old 1080p SDR projector.

My idea is connect the ATV4K mainly to the TV but also from time to time (maybe a couple of times a week) connect it to the projector. Not at the same time. One or the other.

I know I could buy an AVR receiver to mux this (dual output so quite expensive and not my priority right now). But as I use the projector so sparsely I really don't mind to change the HDMi connection each time or alternatively using a basic HDMI switch.

In both cases I face the same situation. I'd like to know if ATV4K will switch automatically to a stored configuration about resolution/HDR or I'll have to manually modify it each time.

I've seen that you have/can choose format (resolution and hertz), HDR/SDR and chroma sampling (BTW I'd like to use auto frame rate in both devices).

For the TV would be one thing, for the projector a very different one. So my question is how will the AT4K handle this ?

Even if it takes some seconds to set up it is ok as long it's automatic. I won't be constantly switching. And only between these 2 devices, not adding new ones.

Thanks a lot!

As far as I’m aware if set to a 4K resolution it will automatically switch to a 1080p SDR resolution if connected to a 1080p display.
I’m not so sure it works the other way around though.

Thanks!

It seems logical. The point is if this switch is temporary as long as you use a 1080 device and the ATV keeps the 4k format settings stored.

It would make sense that format setting defines the best format possible that you want to use, and from there it negotiates with the device and decide the best it can have.

So switching would not be a problem. I hope so...

If anyone has switched back and forth between 1080/4K please tell me if I'm right...

Ok so have just checked it by plugging mine in to the 1080p TV in the bedroom and yes it does seem to revert back to previous settings when I connect back to the 4K in the front room.

Thanks a lot for your effort!
You have helped me a lot!

So apparently it works as expected. You set the maximum and then through handshake it choose the best possible with that device as long as it is lower than the format settings...

Yeah it works fine. My 4K TV is off for repair currently so i've connected mine to my Samsung 24" monitor and it switched to 1080p automatically.

Thanks for your feedback...

Even though it is the logical behaviour, a friend of mine has told me that Google Tv resets the configuration if you change your TV resolution and have to be set each time he changes... I am glad that ATV works better in this aspect.
