Does Azureus/Transmission download logged off?

I was wondering if Azureus or transmission still download even though my laptops screen may be closed, which would cause a log off on my account. So Is the internet connection still on or it turns off? I noticed that whenever I log on, he internet connection works.

If you close your screen, then your connection will turn off.

Yes. This is a limitation of Mac OS X - whenever the computer is put to sleep, all active network connections are closed. This will cause downloads in progress to halt in ALL applications.
