I have a -$200 discount on buying an iPhone, so I'll wait for the iPhone 5 to come out and apply it on that.

The reason I want to do it with Best Buy is because I can sell my 4S for a $300 giftcard and use it on buying the iPhone 5.

Does anyone know this?

If the discount is through your carrier, then yes, Best Buy should honor it.

When you buy an iPhone, and you're signing a contract, whoever you're buying from has to look your account up on your carrier. The carrier then tells whoever's selling you the phone how much to charge you.

In other words, Best Buy doesn't determine the price you pay, when you buy from them. AT&T does.

Not sure. But when I select the iPhone 4S, instead of $649, it shows $449, so I assume I can do the same with the iPhone 5.

That's your early upgrade discount. If you have a 4S you have to pay the early upgrade price of $199 + $250 (16GB) to get the iphone 5. You will be able to get that price anywhere you buy the phone.
