Or Compressor is only part of Final Cut Studio? You can't buy it individually can you?

No, it does not. It's only available bundled with FCS.

Sorenson Squeeze is a good standalone encoding application, but it costs nearly as much as just buying FCS.

Meh.

Thanks for letting me know. Are you aware of any other commercial encoding apps on that level...or the choice is really compressor/squeeze vs. open source stuff?

What are you trying to go from / to? MpegStreamclip will probably be able to do it, and it's free.

Edit: If you want pro level encodes you're going to have to pay for them. Not much free on the Mac side that does super high quality encodes. Also, for the record, I've never had good luck with Squeeze, and prefer Episode Pro if compressor cant get the job done.

Not sure exactly what you're after, but Toast is an option. Not free, but much less than FCS.

MPEG Streamclip is a good encoder, but it would limited to using the codecs already installed on your machine - which means virtually no pro codecs. This is a lot of what you pay for with a standalone professional encoder (like Squeeze, Episode Pro).
