The 30pin connectors have built in DACs, so the audio that comes out is analog.

Thanks for the reply, but don't you mean that the 30pin to lighting adapters have built in DACs ? Because a normal 30pin to USB cable doesn't (and therefore carries digital audio).

But that still doesn't tell me whether the 30pin to lighting adapters pass through digital audio or not ? (do they pass through both analog and digital ?)

Sorry, I must have missed your post. You are right, the 30 pin to Lightning adapter is what I was referring to. A better question to ask would be does the 30 pin connector support digital audio output at all. And based on all of the pinout diagrams I've read it doesn't. Only the lightning connector does (that was one of the big upgrades).
