I would love to enable FileVault, but I'm uncertain whether or not it will impact my backup routines (weekly backup to an external hard drive plus continuous cloud backup via JottaCloud). From what I have understood, both said backups will not contain encrypted files. Only the files on my internal hard drive will be encrypted - and only when I'm not logged in. Is this correct?

"Your Mac works the same as it did before when copying information over the network, uploading files on the Internet, or transferring files to external devices like USB thumbdrives, external hard disk drives, or NAS devices."
This seems to confirm this.

"Your data will be backed up unencrypted if you run backups while you are logged in."
How can the backups run if I'm not logged in? Can the backups be run while the Mac is in screen saver mode? I may then not technically be logged in, as a password is required to exit the screen saver.

"Your data will be backed up encrypted, i.e. in the form of 8MB sparse bundles, if backups are run while you are not logged in. This will happen if scheduled backups run and you did not leave the machine logged in; or, where a machine has two or more user accounts, if one user backs up another user's data."
