It doubles as a sleep button as well. Quickly press and release to put iMac to sleep, press and hold to power down.

I used it for the first month or so and then learned the keyboard shortcut for sleep (option-command-eject).

One thing they really need to move in the next iMac design.

I'd love the Apple logo to act as the power button!

then it would get marked up and dirty. That is why the power button is at the back, so you can't see the finger smudges / dirt from the front :p

Probably and what happens when you go to clean it

That said it really needs to be in a better place. maybe on the bottom edge or something.

The power button on the back makes the iMac neater from the front. If the shortcuts are used, we do not need to use the power button that often. If the iMac is put into sleep when not being in use. The actual use of the power button is even less.

A Cinema/Thunderbolt Display even does not have a power button!

Oh! Instead of it being a button it could be a retina-scanner!

(See what I did there? ;) )

So here is a silly question, I've owned a G4 and now G5 tower, both have a 'throbbing' light on the front when it's sleeping, does the current iMac have anything like that to tell you its asleep and not off?

No but there is a simple test, press a key on the keyboard or click the mouse and wait 5 seconds, if nothing has happened, it's off :p
