Yes. Just be careful that it doesn't get sent as a SMS if both iDevices are iPhones.

It's pretty hard to do. SMS is green, iMessage is blue.

But if both are iPhones and the iMessage doesn't get sent within 5 minutes, it gets bounced and resent as a SMS. This SMS backup send feature can be turned off though.
