I love the old iMovie HD, and would like to keep working on projects with it. If I install iLife '09 , will it erase the old version of iMovie HD?

Thanks!

No, I think iLife 09 will put iMovie HD in a folder called "iMovie (previous version), I know it put iMovie 08 in there, I may have dropped iMovie HD in there myself. I have iMovie HD, iMovie 08 and iMovie 09 all on my Macbook with no problems.

This answer is correct. iMovie 06 is preserved, and projects made in 06 will try to open in 06. You have to import them to iMovie 09.

When I upgraded to '09, it didn't put '08 in the folder ... Anyway, OP, you can create an iMovie folder and place HD in it in order to keep it.
