I did not experience any significant overheating with iPhone 5. Is 5s know for heating more that 5?
 
the A7 itself had a known throttling problem (Apple even discussed in depth their efforts when they released the iPhone 6 on how they worked to make a not as throttle happy processor). I would assume because of that the phone itself heated more than the 5.
 
I don’t think I’ve ever had an iPhone get uncomfortably warm, let alone ‘hot’. Playing demanding games has made it get slightly warm, but not to the point where I even really considered it unusual. Had a phone with an SD800 and that did get very toasty, so I do know the difference...

iOS devices automatically shut down as a precaution if they get too hot. Learned that one hot summer day while using the iPad as GPS on the car dashboard.
