Does it charge when it's off?

I've noticed that when I plug my iPhone in when it is OFF, not asleep, that there is no indication that it is charging. Is it charging or does it need to be on?

I plugged my iPhone into the outlet for the first time last night and looked for the indicator while it was off (like the iPod) to no avail...but it does charge while off and plugged in. I plugged it in and then shut it off to make sure...but I woke up this morning to it being fully charged.

Yep. I turn my phone off at night and plug it in - awake to a full charge.
