Does it matter if one doesn't have the right dock?

For the iPhone 4 and iHome clock radios, does it matter that there is no piece of plastic that fits the iPhone 4 exactly? It works perfectly with no insert, although the phone is completely supported by the 30 pin connector.

Just doublechecking mainly because of the warning in the manual to not use it w/o an insert or it may cause damage to the connector.

I'm sure its a disclaimer because from a mere hardware support standpoint, you can kinda understand how you could snap that off without an insert.

Having said that, I use mine (on a Bose system) sans the insert.
