Does it only ping iOS 14.5+ phones when lost?

Sure, it pings the iPhone network, but can only phones updated to 14.5 recognize the ping?

Or can somehow older iOS phones pick them up and relay to the network too?

Apparently not.

Any iOS 13 device is on the find my network. That’s basically everyone except very old phones. The ping however is iOS 14.5. Otherwise it’s a lot longer.
