does itunes compress .tiff files synced to iphone 3GS & ipad

I have an iphone 3gs, & had synced some photos to it, before this, I had batch compressed them to a small size jpgs, & when I looked at them on my phone, they did not look very good.

I read that itunes uses it's own compression scheme & can sync .tiff files to an iphone or ipad.

what would be the best format & way to prepare my photos for my iphone 3Gs & ipad so they look their best?

some of the photos are photos of my artwork & my photography, so I want them to look their best.

both my iphone & ipad are 8GB capacity
