I’m finding MagSafe cases seem to make maps and compass inaccurate by pointing in completely the wrong direction

In general, phone compasses use a ton of digital tricks to seem accurate despite lots of interference. I havent seen any indication the compass is worse after MagSafe, but it most certainly required Apple to refresh their compass performance When it debuted.

So why does my compass never point in the right direction ever since using a spigen MagSafe case?

Do you have compass calibration turned on under Settings > Privacy and Security > Location Services > System Services > Compass Calibration

I use my iPhone inc a MagSafe case on a telescope in order to locate targets. There are a few apps that do this in order to give “PushTo” capabilities. Obviously it uses the compass and despite the damn great magnet in the phone, plus the damn great magnet in my case and the damn great steel tube of the telescope it can get to target within a fraction of a degree.

I don’t care if they are using a “ton of digital tricks” it doesn’t “seem accurate”, it is accurate.

Looking for solutions, stumbled across this. My compass is reliably 180 degrees out and no amount of calibration, etc. seems to help.

What a joke.

Apple really need to resolve this, as if you're lost and it doesn't calibrate you could really be in trouble. Either remove the compass app entirely or make it do a reliable calibration procedure like it used to in IOS versions from a decade ago.

A compass that TELLS YOU BLATANT LIES is worse than no compass.

I suppose you could always walk backwards? ;)

I regularly use the compass on my iPhone 16 Pro and I find it remarkably accurate. Had it since October and I’ve never had to recalibrate. And I use a MagSafe case too.

On my old 14 Pro it would very occasionally require recalibration, usually after it had been adjacent, rather than above, and close to a large metal object and/or something magnetic.
