Does Metal increase scaled retina performance?

Currently running a 4k display at a scaled resolution which means my rMBP is pushing out 5k and then downscaling to 4k. This gives the graphics performance a bit of a hit.

Is this anything Metal helps with? I might be mistaken but from what I can tell it's supposed to reduce GPU load?
