This morning the laptop hung on me before a forced restart after a message appeared.

After entering my credentials at the first log in screen (drive encryption) the status bar continues to 100% and does not proceed from there, it stays stuck on that screen for hours (I left it for about 7 hours)

Booting into safe mode doesn't seem to work either - after I enter my login, it gets about half way before all of a sudden shutting down completely.

Recovery mode isn't great either - the reinstall option appears, but after when I click continue, it is grey out and nothing happens, and remains on the screen with the multiple options of recovery.

Time machine back up - one which I thought would have been covered as I have a backup that is 2 weeks old and happy to restore this. But after I enter my password as its an encrypted drive, it doesn't proceed to show me what available to back-up.

I've called Apple, they're reading from a script I'm sure, so limited help there, and they've advised me to take it in to a technician.

What are my options?
