Does performance suffer with more fonts installed?

I have a ton of fonts installed on my Mac, and I was wondering if general performance takes a hit as a result of this. I know that several M$ apps take aeons to "Optimize Font Menus", but I was curious about general OS-level slowdowns, etc. Anyone have any info?

Also, I mysteriously have multiples of some of the fonts installed -- any safe/sure-fire way to remove these without disrupting anything?
