Does Private Relay inspire you to cancel your VPN service?

Now that Safari has Private Relay will you be getting rid of your VPN? Since Private Relay doesn't with other browsers, I guess I need to keep my VPN. Or I could stop using other browsers if I get rid of my monthly VPN fee. What is everyone thinking of doing?

I don't plan on getting rid of my VPN mostly because I can depend on traffic funneling through it.
Private relay sounds like a great feature but because it excludes so much and you have no control over what data from which apps are using it, I'd rather not.

Also some apps that deal with streaming video, location services or whatever else, usually fail when using a VPN, I'd be worried about them also failing when using private relay when I didn't really intend to be using it, then adding to the struggle to disable it after realizing it must be the issue.

Yes that's exactly what I'm experiencing. I was using Private Relay and Hulu wouldn't load. When I disabled Private Relay, Hulu loaded. However, this happens with VPN's also. Sometimes I have to use a feature of my VPN called Dedicated IP address in order to stream.

I am considering dropping ProtonVPN. Yes, I know Private Relay is not meant to replace a VPN, but I do not use my VPN a lot.

I will definitely keep ProtonVPN until the public release of all the new OS's, though the only ones I am not testing are macOS Monterey and audioOS. On a side note, I think I might jump on the latest developer beta of macOS, if not this beta, definitely the DB4.

audioOS...staying clear of that!

:apple:

Private Relay does 100% of what I expect from a VPN for my use cases but it’s Safari only. I hope they can make it function system wide in the next OS version.

Its funny, if I use my VPN in Los Angeles area, Hulu won’t work. If I use it in Tijuana, MX , Hulu won't work without the VPN.

I don't see a whole lot of overlap between PR and a VPN - a VPN can protect ALL your traffic and PR only works for Safari. Not to mention with most VPN's you can pick which country you want to "land" in which can be very useful in a lot of common use cases for a VPN (ie circumventing region locks).

If you want to remain truly "anonymous" for whatever reason then PR isn't the right tool.

Private Really works (Or makes not work) gas station apps on an iPhone...so the apps must be doing something...I know this is the Monterey thread...but maybe some apps can use it?

Yea, unfortunately some websites won't load on my VPN (certain Ebay pages are the last one I experienced). Unfortunately that's the way it has to be. Many use VPN simply to have their web surfing be kept private but a not insubstantial group is using VPN for scamming, paid trolling etc.

That's a good point on location changing as well as Apple's relay limited to Safari only. I primarily use Safari but there are times I can't.

Ebay probably has most of them blacklisted already. I can get to eBay on just about any AirVPN server, but when I sign in, it royally screws my account up every single time. When I login, they tell me they've had an issue and locked my account and I have to go reset my password, which lets me log in once, and then starts the whole show all over again. Even though Safari shows me still logged in, I have to be completely off my VPN if I happen to just want to go browse eBay and do anything with my account like just add something to my watchlist. Otherwise the minute I do anything it starts the whole 'we've locked your account' routine.

I have several sites setup on my 'Routes' list to go outside the tunnel. Craigslist, OfferUp, Ebay, my own website host, there's even a few audio manufacturers like Waldorf and MOTU who block a lot of them.

I'll tell you what it does want me to do, is cancel Hulu. It's complaining "I'm using a using an anonymous proxy or VPN." F-you. You don't need to know who I am, I'm a subscriber. They really need to work this **** out. Change your business model Hulu, if you can't deal with people not wanting sell their personal information to you, on top of the subscriber fees I already pay.

Only works for those who are willing to put all their information on their computer "on to somebody else’s computer you don’t know and can’t find out", or in other simpler less informative totally safe sounding words: the (pretty summer beach) cloud.
