on the iphone 3g, will i get the improved reception if i have the phone set to use edge (for battery reasons)?

Yes my reception changes drastically, at home it goes form 1 bar with 3G to 5 bars on Edge.

If you try to make a call with the 1 bar on 3G, is the call choppy or clear? Does it drop out? Does turning 3G on and off even make a difference with actual phone calls? 3G is just how the data is transferred, right?

When I did a call the call was clear and fine with 1 bar on 3G - data downloads though were really slow and I was better off turning 3G off and going with EDGE to get a more stable connection.
