My friend is at UVA and having MacBook Pro problems. So apparently she did a system update (she's running lion) and once the computer was done and did a reboot, it never got past the gray screen with the Apple logo and spinning circle (stays on that screen for more than 50 minutes). Personally I think her hard drive is dead

We also did a lot of things like trying to repair the hard drive, holding down a bunch of keys while booting, etc. Nothing really worked.

Do you guys have any idea as to what the issue may be? If it is the hard drive, I can fix that for her without a problem. Thanks!

Put the machine in target disk "T" mode and backup what you can. Then use the hopefully successfully created recovery partition "R" to reformat and reinstall.
