Hey guys,

Just wanting to know how you are all going with your Smart Covers ?

Any sign of scratches at all where it connects?

Im looking at applying a clear shield for the back and getting a Smart Cover for the front ?

I really doubt that apple would design a cover that would scratch the product. Perhaps if the magnets wear through the cover.

Absolutely no scratches from mine. However, I only remove the smart cover 1-2 times a week.

It scratched mine!!

An iPad smart cover did scratch mine!!!!! I returned smart cover to best buy and also showed the manager my scratched iPad... he signed my receipt and guaranteed an iPad exchange... but I told him I wanted to wait until the shortages werent so bad because I did not want to deprive someone from an iPad2 just because of a small scratch on the side of my iPad... it didnt scratch where the magnetic latches attach to the iPad... my scratch happened right in between where the two latches are located... i know there is rubber padding in that part of the smart cover but it seems that was not enough to prevent a scratch... i removed the smart cover maybe 3 times in the first 2 weeks that i had it... the scratch happened after week 2...

i know it is not much of a scratch but i just paid almost $700 for my iPad + smart cover... if I scratch it, its my fault and I will just live with it... but I didnt scratch it... i have been on these boards long enough to know that someone will flame me and tell me its my fault: to posters who are about to accuse me of doing this myself -- save your time, i dont care what you think...

i am simply typing this post as a warning for those who are CONVINCED that the smart cover will not scratch their device.. it can scratch it even under the most careful usage possible... also .. for those who think apple is incapable of a design flaw: you should look at the material used on the back of all iPod touches... scratch magnets!!!!!!!!

one more thing

I am not necessarily saying its a design flaw. Maybe my particular smart cover was bent and that caused too much friction between the smart cover and the ipad. All im saying is that it is possible for the smart cover to scratch ipad no matter how careful you are. And if it happened to mine, it can happen to any of the other 2 million people that probably have an ipad2 by now. i love the smart cover. buying a ghost armor/bse and another smart cover are not out of the question... i actually miss my smart cover... but i no longer trust leaving it on my ipad.. considering how careful i was the first time around...

I don't doubt that it happened to you but I just removed my smart cover and took a close look at that area and can't figure out how it's possible. Do you still have your smart cover to see if it was slightly bent?

I returned it. I checked and it was not bent at all (at least not that I could see). What I did notice is that the rubber liner in that area seemed indented... and was darker than the rest of the rubber from where the silver ipad paint had rubbed off... i could not figure it out either... maybe the "bend" in the metal was not visible to the untrained eye but everything seemed to be in order...

Maybe it was a defect in the rubber liner? maybe the metal was not bend but there was a defect in the rubber material preventing metal on metal friction between the cover and the ipad... not sure if the indentation in the rubber happened before or after the ipad got scratched... point is.. its possible... and i was planing to get a stealth armor for the back.. but it was naked at the time so i was barely using my ipad.. and when i wasnt using it i had it in this timbuk2 envelope sleeve...

Thanks for the feedback guys

Looks like if you apply a clear invisible shield guard for the back, you should be pretty safe of putting a Smart Cover on as you will know it wont "scratch" through the invisible shield....

Scratched back !!!

I have a scratched back from the cover. It is the exact picture as above. The magnet has some how. "drilled" a hole in the back. No joke. I'm taking it to the apple store this weekend.
Feel free to contact with any questions.

I've just noticed the exact same problem as the picture with mine. Raging

You really don't expect the thing that's supposed to protect your expensive product to be the thing to damage it! How did everyone get on? Did they accept liability for the iPad damage?

I saw that my smart cover was staring to scratch mine, but when I cut it, it was so early that it was just a dark area that came off when I rubbed with my finger...

As soon as I saw it i put a pice of clear take covering where the cover touches the iPad...

I just joined this forum to say that the same exact thing happened to my ipad 2 in the same location.

The smart cover will in fact scratch your ipad 2. I'm pretty damn disappointed.

That looks like quite a strange scratch... since there are scratches on both the smart cover and ipad, was there maybe some debris between the ipad and the smart cover that actually caused this?

Hey nancy123,

That is an awesome case !! Perfect as it looks like the original iPad 1 case that Apple bought out, honestly, what is your opinion of this case ? Is it good quality ? The photos look good, but its hard to say if it's good or not from the photos...

Is the stitching and everything good ?

As mentioned previously, my smart cover is also scratching the middle of my iPad. Im definitely going to stop using it. I wonder what the return policy is like at best buy in terms of how many days you have to return something.

Yeah, I was about to say the same thing. I don't see how you can have scratches on the same place on both your ipad and smart cover hinge without something getting in the middle between them. Therefore, the smart cover didn't scratch your ipad, a piece of debris did.

If you bought the right ipad 2 smart cover, it can scratch the ipad 2, just to see here: Image

I just bought this one from case2case.net/ipad-2-smart-cover-gray.html

And I just saw a news that United State president also carried this ipad 2 smart cover

Wait, you're saying that the case the President is carrying in this photo is the same case you're recommending? Because it clearly is not. It's the Apple smart cover in that photo. It's obvious because in that photo you can clearly see the smart cover hinge and the case you're recommeding has no hinges. I'm not saying anything is wrong with that case, just that it's not the same one in the picture.

I had some marks where the smart pad connected but they rubbed right out. When I first saw it I thought they were scratches but I guess it was just dirt/dust build up.

Same thing here. It looked like a metallic dust. Rubbed right off.

:( they could've at least warned us. i mean honestly, who really sits there thinking about debris getting stuck in between the two items? They had enough time on the ipad 2 to notice things like this and I didn't. It hasn't even been a week since i got the Ipad 2 and it already has a scratch due to the (yes ill say it) smart cover. I took real good care of my first ipad and i never had any scratches on it. I'm just real disappointed that the smart cover lead to this.

I'm not raging im just disappointed because like the rest of you guys, i try to take care of our purchases.
