Does TextEdit allow highlighting of selected text?

A long annoyance, and with recent success on another topic, I thought I'd ask about this here.

In MacBook Pro TextEdit app (1.8) I can find instructions to change text color, and background color of whole document. But what I want is to highlight a few selected words with yellow background, as with a highlighter pen (also doable in Word for Mac but I can't find it in Text Edit).

Is this possible or not?

Preview and its Annotation Tools can do that, as far as I know.

And TextEdit is a simple text editor like WordPad or Notepad, not like MS Office Word, which is a COMPLEX text editor.

Maybe you have to look at text editing application alternatives for Mac OS X.

Thanks for this. The list looks interesting, though many things on there are very old and not updated.
