Does that old smart/dumb phone switcheroo trick still work?

I have a smartphone on an unlimited 4G verizon plan. My mom has a dumb phone on the same family plan. We are both eligible for an upgrade. I remember last year there was a thread about how 2 people could have bought phones (one smart and one dumb) for a subsidized prize and then do a switch so that I wouldn't have to pay full price to keep the unlimited 4G. She would basically get the smart phone under her name and I would get the dumb phone, then we would trade phones before we activate or something like that.

I can't seem to find that thread. In any case, does that trick still work w/Verizon?
