I have a complete set of spare cMP internals, but they're 4,1 flashed to 5,1 whereas my main machine is an organic 5,1. If anything takes a dump I plan to just swap it all out.

However, I know the 4,1 CPU tray needs delidded CPUs due to heatsink design, but could I swap my 5,1 heatsinks onto it to get around that requirement? I'd prefer not to have to dismantle my X5677s in the midst of a total hardware transplant.

The 5.1 heatsinks do not fit the 4.1 cpu tray, As the 4.1 heatsinks don't fit the 5.1 cpu trays. if you look at the distance between the locating screws for heat sinks you will see they have different spacing.

you also cant fit a 5.1 cpu tray in a 4.1 machine as the fans will spin at full speed, and visa versa 4.1 cpu try in a 5.1 will do the same.

5.1 with 5.1 cpu tray only same for flashed to 5.1 can only have 4.1 cpu tray.
