Sorry, I don't have access to a Macbook Air... but I want to buy one... just had a question. Does it take two hands to open the air because it's not heavy enough to open with one hand.

Odd. My 13" 2011 MBA stays nicely on the desk as I open it. I open it just like the Apple commercial where I push partly back and partly up on the cover. The feet seem to keep it well planted and I'm able to open past the 90 degree

I don't get these "yes" answers. No, it does not need two hands to open. Set it down on your desk. One hand to open, easily.

I can open my 11" 2011 MBA with one hand. I don't know why people have to use two....... You just use two fingers and lift up and mine opens right up. OP if you can get to an apple store I would go check one out for yourself.

I can use one hand on my 11". Just make sure you change hands regularly.

just tried it :D

yes you can open with one hand, but the bottom part barely stays down. using both hands feels more stable.

Yes, one hand can do but if you need to use it longer period, better open it with two hands.

You can't imagine when it slips and falls down to the floor once use only one hand to open it.

The reason for 2 different sets of answers is that the friction of the hinge on the MBA 11 is set almost exactly right around the point were it will barely work or not work. This might depend on whether the hinge is clean, you pull exactly the right amount at the right angle, and the phase of the moon exerts just enough extra gravitation (ok, just kidding on the last one... :)

But I can usually open my 2010 MBA 11 slowly with just one finger.

I can open my 2011 11" MBA with one hand. As I open it the front lower portion does come up off the desk and inch or two. But then the friction of the hinge will let loose and the lid will start to open. So my hinge is slightly tighter than others.

In fact, if my MBA is open with the screen standing straight up, if I push back on the screen from the top center, the front of the lower portion will come up the same amount before the hinge opens further.

Basically you have to fling it upwards fast enough before gravity has a chance to act upon it.

I have a 2010 and it only takes one hand to open it on a flat surface or a slanted up surface.

The 11" seems to require two hands.

The 13" will open mostly with one hand, but it feels more stable with two.

I can open mine with a finger. It remains in place and doesn't pull up with the lid.

It depends, usually the bottom slightly raises so I use my other hand but other times it doesnt matter. I think it is because how fast I open it. Never thought about that before. :p

I have the 11" MBA and with the Speck clear plastic shell it has extended bumpers on the rear two feet of the laptop. This allows it to be opened with one hand and not tilt at any point. I like the Speck hard shell case b/c it's super low profile, protects against scratches for increased resale value and it makes the lid a pleasure to open compared to it's normal naked self.

Is it also a great way to stay in shape?
