Does the APP3 U2 chip require an iPhone that also has the U2?

I’m looking forward to the enhanced findability of the APP3 with the upgraded U2 chip. Finding my APP2 has always been hit or miss. The 2nd gen has the older U1 chip.

I was just curious if iPhones that don’t have the U2 chip (pre-iPhone 15) can make use of the better chip and find the AirPods easier?

I believe both devices need to have the U2 chip for enhanced Finding.
