Just a quickie, on my iMac 27" the DVD Drive always whirs when you shut the computer down or power it up. I'm guessing this is normal and I'm not really worried about it - possibly unique to the brand of drive fitted. Only reason I'm asking is my previous 27" iMac drive never did this.

My Macbook used to do this, then I recall Apple released a firmware update that stopped the drive from making that noise when it started up. It's never done it on shutdown.

Not so sure about when shutting down but the drive is obviously going to spin up on starting up in order to access the OS etc.

Same here. My 2009 iMac didn't do that during startup. My 2011 iMac's DVD drive does make a noise when I startup. I figured it was a change in the hardware or something. Nothing to worry about I guess. Never makes the noise when shutting down.
