Does the iPhone and AT&T work in Europe?

might be a dumb question. However, I will be teaching in Europe next year (2010-2011) and was just curious.

Yes it does work, but data roaming costs could be a killer. If you are going to be there for a year, getting a local service sim card might be a good idea. If you know you can use wi-fi for data, then make sure Data Roaming is turned off all the time.
