Does the iPhone5 work at all with no SIM installed ?

i'm waiting for my not-very-advanced cellphone provider to send me a NanoSIM for the new iPhone5. I haven't got my phone yet, but when it does arrive, will I be able to use the WiFi without a SIM installed ? Does it just sit there like a brick without one ?

Without SIM installed, iPhone works just fine as glorified iPod Touch. All functionality works but cellular radios.
