Does the Mac OS X Public Beta still function?

Hey guys, I know I just did another post, but I have another question about something quite different. I am interested in obtaining a copy of the Mac OS X Public Beta, but I just read on Wikipedia that it ceased to function in spring 2001. Does this mean that if I do a fresh install on my iMac G3, I will not be able to use this OS at all? Honestly, I don't see how it would be possible for Apple to stop software from functioning like this. Anyway, let me know if I would be able to use this software. Thank you!

If you change the internal clock it still works. But there isn't much you can do with it.

Good, I can use it! Do I change the internal clock from System Preferences, like one would usually change the time?

Yes, but do it before you install the OS or the installer won't install it.

I just changed the internal clock on my computer, and it appears that the clock battery is dead. I can change the year temporarily, but after a while the year changes to something like 1971. Do I need a new clock battery to change the date in order to use the beta, or will I be able to use it anyway because the clock is set before the time that it expires?

It should work with the 1971 date.

Here's a few I took of it when I tried it on an old G3 desktop recently - the "Music Player" application is interesting to see nowadays, a relic of a pre-iTunes world...

By the way this is OS X 10.0 "Cheetah" Server, so just after Public Beta - thought this was an interesting one to show as amazingly to this day (or at least a few months ago when I tried this) Apple's Software Update servers still offer an updated version of the beta version of MS IE for OS X that was bundled with 10.0 - who'd have thought it, Apple pushing out IE, long after the agreement with MS to ship Mac OS with IE as the default browser expired...

I've always wanted to try it out but haven't been able to find a copy of it anywhere (at least, not for a reasonable price). It's interesting to see how much of it is still present in the current OS (although of course it looks a lot different now!)

OH MY GOSH!!!! I'm sorry, but that looks even cooler than the new ones out now. I know that Panther is more efficient, but is there like a theme that mimics Public Beta? I want to have it so badly now.

Aaaah Mac OS X 10.0 and before. I remember those. Thanks to this thread my PowerMac 8600/250 will be getting a XPostFacto install of Mac OS X 10.0 later...

Oh, Apple open-sourced Mac OS X Server 1.0-1 and 1.0-2 a while ago. Here's a link for downloading it:

Actually, I thought that Public Beta was open-source, and I almost accidentally downloaded it from a pirated website . Does anybody know of a way to get Mac OS X Server 1.0 onto a Clamshell iBook? I really like the components from NeXT and OS 9 with the Unix base.

I'm pretty sure there aren't any legal downloads of Server 1.x, the files on that FTP look to only be updates rather than the full package - as far as I know Mac OS 7.5.5 is still the newest Mac OS that can be legally downloaded for free.

The iBook is not meant to be compatible with OS X 1.x at all - see http://support.apple.com/kb/TA28250 for compatible machines - though at http://rhapsodyos.org/hardware/system_requirements/system_requirements_1.html there is reference to Server 1.2 (not 1.0) being possible to run on a clamshell.
