Does the number of apps on your phone slow it down

Just curious I would like to download a lot of apps without worrying if they will slow my phone down or affect battery.

No, but there are certain apps that can run in the background (think music) that affect battery life if you use them. Those are a case by case basis. Empty memory is memory wasted!

I know I want to use as much memory as possible.

Downloading many apps won't slow down your phone, but using up all of its storage will. Just make sure to keep one or two GB free.
