Well the new remote but the lightning connection rather than usbc. My remote is very stiff and the old one worked better? I have another in bedroom and could try it or take it back under warranty but may be easier just to replace it?

Yes, it should work, but Apple doesn't give instructions on how to do it.

To pair it, make sure both ATVs (the one with the new Remote and the bedroom ATV) are unplugged. Turn on the new ATV by plugging it back in, when the ATV gets to the home screen, hold the old Remote a few inches from the new ATV box then press and hold both the menu (back) button and volume up button. Hold them both for about ten seconds and it should pair.

Repeat the same for the bedroom ATV, but use the new Remote.

There might be some easier way, but that is how I do it.

My ATV 4K 2022 remote has two stiff buttons now. They were okay for a few weeks but turned rather stiff over time. Apple probably used crappy parts. As much as the remote costs, it shouldn't be that way. There are a lot of users with this same complaint. Maybe in 8 to 10 years we will get a $2 class action settlement from Apple!

Sometimes I still use the little white plastic remote from early Mac Mini and first gen AppleTV... they all work fine.
This is true, I recently used one with the ATV, and it didn't have to be programed or linked to that specific ATV.

Fun fact: Just about any IR remote in the world can be used on any generation of Apple TV using the Remote Learning Feature. It only takes a few seconds, following the instructions on the screen, pressing the corresponding buttons on the IR remote you are trying to use.

You can even do advanced playback buttons, such as skip, fw, rw, pause, stop, play, etc.

My 2022 Apple TV is paired with the first-gen Apple Remote that came bundled with my Mac in 2007. So to answer your question, yep :)
If you ask why, its because i spilled some milk on the remote while making mashed potatoes lol and i dont want to get a new one because a similiar accident can occur. That Apple TV is in the kitchen.
