I am no expert just a worried consumer. I saw from somewhere that thermal throttles happen to protect the computer from overheating, and this patch will make it easier to wear out because the computer heats up continuously and doesn't throttle(or not as badly) to self protect.:eek:Is this true? Would you recommend the 2018 MBPs to someone who wants to keep it for say 4-5 years?

Thanks in advance for any insights you would like to share

No, I'd say the rapid cycling of clock speed would be much more rough on the CPU long-term.

High temps are bad for CPUs and for components. Exactly how much faster it will cause failures is impossible to say, only that the hotter it gets the more likely eventual failure becomes.

The components are operating within their safe, tested limits and you should not worry about it. Mac CPUs have been running very hot for years and years, without any reliability issues. The negative effect of heat is totally overstated.

the throttling is done automatically at 100c on the CPU and other components have their thermal limits. I'm not sure what those limits are, but they'll down clock when getting too hot.

With that said, here's my opinion, first the patch does not make the laptop run cooler but faster. I'm still seeing CPU temps quickly hitting 100c, and other sensors show a very warm internal. I come from the notion that heat is bad for electronic components, so much so, I use an app to limit the wattage (I'm throttling the computer manually if you will), and my temps are 20 to 30c cooler then without this app. I have a lot more peace of mind knowing that my laptop is running a heck of a lot cooler.

[doublepost=1532605553][/doublepost]What is the app to limit the wattage and cool the machine?
Thanks

Volta There's a trial, so you can try it before you buy it

I have mine set to 30 watts currently, you can find the balance of performance vs. heat for your needs.
