I noticed after doing a phone to phone transfer that a massive amount of space has been taken up by pictures while on my old phone it was just a small amount since it usually just deletes picture and videos that are backed up to iCloud. Why did it download all those pictures and will it automatically delete them again as I need more space for other apps?

If you go to your user profile (top item in Settings), then select iCloud, then Photos, make sure that "Optimize iPhone Storage" is selected. This will cause the original photo files to be kept in iCloud, and the phone will store smaller versions.

It’s already checked which makes this even weirder.
