Does the previous generation iPod Universal Dock work with iPhone 3G?

I just picked up a iPod Universal Dock (the one with the circular IR receiver) on clearance at Target for $10. Does this work with the iPhone 3G? I have an older dock with just the line out and 30-pin connector which won't let me use my iPhone's speaker while docked. Does the Universal Dock do the same thing? Thanks!

I have an older one as well, never had troubles with the speaker not working
what I do know is you'll always get that annoying "not made for iPhone" popup every time you plug it in, even though it works fine
