I currently have a 2010 macbook pro which of course is non retina, and i have to use a matte external monitor because my window is right behind my desk and it gets pretty sunny during the day. I heard the retina screens dont get as much glare and wanted to know of your experiences with it

Apple has improved the display to a degree that you don't get as much reflections but depending on where you use the Mac, it can still be problematic.

If you have a direct Window behind you, even with the anti-glare coating that is standard on Retina screens, you will still have a decent amount of glare. It sucks that Apple totally dropped the Matte screen years ago, but it is what it is. I would look into a Windows 10 Laptop that has a matte screen if you cannot move your desk to another, less sunny location.
